Is Hello Fresh Gluten Free? We answer that question and share how to hack your Hello Fresh Box to make it coeliac safe!
This is not a sponsored post, just sharing a little Hello Fresh Hack we use ourselves to make gluten free eating easier! This post also isn't endorsed by Hello Fresh.
When you're a coeliac, finding safe food options is often a struggle.
Restaurants are full of cross contaminations. Take away is fraught with danger. Supermarket trips involve reading label after label. But there are often ways around it.
Until reently, I thought that Hello Fresh was a no-go for coeliacs. Heck, it even says it right there on their website.
But with a bit of research and a few little tweaks - we found a way to make it work and we wanted to share our Hello Fresh Hack with you so you can try it for yourself!
Here's how we did it! >>
When you have a look at the Hello Fresh menu options, you'll notice a lot of them say Naturally Gluten Free and Not Suitable for Coeliacs. Sounds a bit contradictory, right?
Well, the reason is this....
Almost all of the spice mixes used in the boxes have a May Contain Gluten/Wheat statement. For coeliacs, that's a no go.... but those items are easily swapped out.
So we did just that.
For each recipe, I checked the allergy information both on Hello Fresh's website and on the packaging itself - and I made any necessary swaps.
Gluten Free Hello Fresh Spice Mix Swaps
Here's what I used instead of the spice mixes with may contain statements:
All-American Spice Mix: Cumin, cayenne, onion powder, smoked paprika, garlic salt, dried parsley
Italian Herbs: I used a gluten free blend I had in the pantry
Aussie Spice Mix: Cumin, garlic salt, paprika, brown sugar
Tex Mex Spice Mix: Cumin, cayenne, garlic salt, smoked paprika, oregano, onion powder
The sauces used in the boxes are Roza's Gourmet which are gluten free so they're fine to use (and delicious!) and most of the ingredients are gluten free as well.
When choosing your menu options on the website, you'll find allergy information listed beside each ingredient. On one occasion we found this different from the packaging (rice in one of our meals was first listed as having traces of gluten but on the packet there were no known allergens) so it pays to double check when you get your box.
As with anything when you are a coeliac or have special dietary needs, you need to make sure you check before eating things! I'm sure the ingredients do change so whilst the menu options we chose worked for us at the time, they may have gluten ingredients later.
How to save $50 on your Hello Fresh order
We tried Hello Fresh because we had a discount code from a friend - and you can use this link to get $50 off your order too!
PRO TIP! Make sure you pause future deliveries once you've placed your first order so you're not charged for any future orders. Once your delivery arrives you can also cancel your Hello Fresh plan so you're not charged in the future - or you can continue and pay for future boxes.
You can use this code for any plan, meaning you can choose 3 meals for 2 people and only pay $15.96 for your box. That's cheaper than buying the groceries for those three meals!
