With bookshelves stuffed full of rainbow coloured books and a reading list a mile long, it was only natural that my home office was designed to be both a work space and a cosy reading nook.
It is seriously my favourite place in the whole house - and since I did a little redecorating this weekend, I thought I’d share my tips for creating the perfect reading nook!
So here are my top tips for creating an extra cosy reading nook! >>
1. Find a comfy spot to sit
My reading chair used to be a cosy red armchair - but I always wanted somewhere I could stretch my feet out, so when I was deciding what I wanted in my office, I went on the hunt for the ULTIMATE chair.
After sitting and laying in a bunch of different chairs, I decided on this KIVIK Chaise from IKEA and have loved it ever since. It’s almost too perfect, because I’ll find myself dozing off after a long reading session 😛💤💤
2. Add lots of cosy blankets and pillows
A comfy chair is a must, but so are blankets and pillows! It’s Spring in Sydney right now (though it doesn’t feel or look like it!), so I’ve swapped my thick wintery blankets for this crisp White Barcelona Blanket from Lorraine Lea and added in some colour with the Cairns Euro Pillow (back), super soft Velvet Cushion in Teal (front left) and Sana Cushion in Teal (front right).
Euro pillows might be for the bedroom, but if you have a chair big enough - do yourself a favour and add one. They’re big, cosy, marshmallowy and perfect for snuggling up and reading the day away.
3. Warm lighting brings all the cosy vibes
I love warm golden lighting and they’re the perfect for adding those hygge vibes to your reading nook. Think golden fairy lights, warm vintage globes and lots of lamps.
Not only do they look great, they also improve air quality! Right now in my office I have four impossible to kill plants (and I say impossible because, while we were away, my Mum managed to murder three of my other “hard to kill” plants 😛). A yucca, peace lily, jade tree cuttings and devil’s ivy. These plants also fare well in places that don’t have too much natural light. My office is actually really dark (hence all of those lights!) but they are all thriving!
Sure, Pinterest is great for decorating ideas - but the cosiest spaces are ones that feel like home. For me, adding plants, rainbow coloured books, cute little trinkets and pretty things are a must!
And if you ask me? Never be afraid of colour. Monochrome and pastels might be trendy, but bright colours (especially if you incorporate your favourite colours) make for a much more cheerful space! My favourite colour is pink - but I love teal as an accent colour as it's calming and bright.
Marathon reading sessions need snacks. I actually have a jar of chocolates on my side table - and I totally bought that side table just because I needed somewhere for my teacups 😛
It’s no secret that I’m an oil addict. My diffuser runs constantly in this room. When I’m working during the day, I’ll diffuse oils for concentration, and when I’m reading I’ll add something calming or a delicious scent like coconut and vanilla so it smells homely and inviting.
But tell me,
Do you have a cosy reading nook in your home? Or somewhere you love to sit and drink a cup of tea or watch a movie?
PS: I did receive those Lorraine Lea items as a gift - but all opinions are my own and have not been influenced by the brand at all! I just love all things cosy 😛
