Santa, that big jolly guy with the reindeer who fly through the night, pulling along his sleigh so that he can deliver all of the presents to boys and girls across the world.
Well... that's what I used to think! Today Yesterday, the Christmas Blogging Challenge asks When/How did you learn that Santa wasn't real? (I was the silly girl who didn't click publish last night!)
This is something I remember exactly and likely always will (it helps that I have a very very good photographic memory).
Cue light bulb moment.
I knew that Santa was supposed to make the toys in the North Pole - and I knew that China definitely wasn't in the North Pole - So I confronted my Mum straight away.
She was taking down the Christmas tree at the time, when I said....
"Santa's not real.. isn't he? That's why this says made in China"
She looked at me half shocked and half upset because she knew it was coming and simply said "No... he isn't real"
I said "Oh, okay" before pondering what I'd just found out and getting hit with a massive realisation...
"Oh gosh, Mum... The tooth fairy isn't real? The Easter Bunny isn't real either?!?!!"
I don't know whether my Mum was more upset or I - not only had I found out that Santa wasn't real - everything else fell like dominoes!
My mum reassured me and told me that no, they weren't real either - but I couldn't tell my sister or any of the other kids at school.
I still got to pretend that Santa, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy were real since my sister was younger and so were my cousins - but I remember bursting into tears when my sister found out that Santa wasn't real because my 11 year old self thought that Christmas was ruined and we'd never get any presents again :P

I found out that Santa wasn't real when I opened my gift one Christmas morning only to see the bicycle that I had seen my dad storing in our shed the week before. I guess I just put two and two together and figured it out!

ReplyDeleteWell I found out Santa wasn't real in grade 4 when one of the kids ruined it for me- I was so shocked and in disbelief. The parent helpers wouldn't answer me and told me to ask my parents, with the usual 'if you believe then he is'. I asked my dad first and he, in true form, said- ask your mother. Then she confirmed my worst nightmare- h wasn't real! I was pretty gutted, but also felt so grown up that I was 'in' on the secret haha.

Hehe you know I don't remember the moment when I realised that he wasn't real. I think my parents never really put up much of a pretense that he was. But I do remember telling my sister that I heard sleighbells in the night (which was probably our cat's bells).
ReplyDeleteI was the middle child of seven. My Mom always did a great job of having us believe in the magic of Christmas, especially Santa. Money was always tight , but, she always found a way to give us wonderful things we wanted from Santa. You knew you "grew up" when she would allow you to help set out the presents from Santa. But, even then, when you woke up the next morning there was always something special under the tree from Santa that you never knew about! To this day, I still believe in the magic of Santa, so he (she) must be real and living in all of us!(

ReplyDeleteI was in grade 3 and I had an idea that he wasn't real from the kids at school. So one day I asked my dad, 'dad, you wouldn't lie to me, would you?'. Of course he said 'no darling!'. So I asked 'is santa real?'. His face dropped, he looked alarmed, and sat me down and said 'no darling, he's not real'. Then gave me a chocolate bar. Good on you Dad!

I was in primary school and kids talk and I listened and the tears started, lol. I love the spirit of Christmas, and I still get butterflies on Christmas Eve.

I worked it out when I was in prep. It just occurred to me one day that the idea of a man flying around the world in a sleigh pulled by reindeer wasn't logical. I remember getting in trouble with my teacher for telling the other kids that Santa isn't real. And I also remember feeling very confused as to why I'd get in trouble for telling the truth.

I found out when I was five.
ReplyDeleteMy older brother told me (he was such a kill-joy) and I remember I cried for days.
I also remember that Mum and Dad wanted to wring his neck.
i found out santa wasn't real when i found my christmas present from 'santa' on my mums receipt wasn't a fun day!

ReplyDeleteI found out Santa wasn't real one night when grandmother was feeling less than festive. After a few too many G&Ts on Christmas Eve, grandmother sat herself down next to me and grabbed herself a cookie that was left out for Santa and uttered the words, "Nothing wrong with me having a nibble now. I'm only starting a tad early this time".

ReplyDeleteI found out Santa wasnt real the night i waited up secretly and saw my mother sneaking in with my santa sack. I never let her know that i knew until a few years later.:)

ReplyDeleteTo be honest I don't remember! Just like I don't remember how I found out that the Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy weren't real but I survived and still enjoy the holidays about them all!!

I wrote and promptly posted my letter to Santa myself - without using my parents as the usual go-betweens- in order to test Santa's veracity. Needless to say, that year I didn't get a bike as I'd asked Santa - I got practical school supplies from my parents instead. lorexstevex@hotmail.com

One of my older sisters told me. The night before Christmas I was so excited only for her to tell me. There is no Santa. I wrapped your presents. I was devastated.

SANTA NOT COMING. THE CIVIL AVIATION SAFETY AUTHORITY DEMANDED HE DO A 2 YEARLY FLIGHT TEST. UPON ACCEPTING THE AUSTRALIAN FLIGHT TEST OFFICER SANTA ASKED HIM WHAT THE SHOTGUN WAS FOR AS THEY BOARDED THE SLEIGH. THE OFFICER TOLD SANTA HE WAS GOING TO GET A DOUBLE ENGINE FAILURE ON TAKE OFF AND WANTED TO SEE HOW IT WOULD BE HANDLED. SANTA AND THE HEAD REINDEER RUDOLPH SAID NO.

I was 8 when i caught dad tiptoeing round the house,he wasnt as quiet as a mouse,I had a peep i had to see it was my dad not santa putting the presents under the tree. mc-woods@bigpond.net.au
ReplyDeleteI was very young , about 5 my wardrobe key fitted mums wardrobe l use to play with all the goodies stored in there while my parents were in the dairy milking cows , the same goodies turned up under the Christmas tree a few weeks later from Santa
ReplyDeleteI was about 8 years old when I pretended to be sleeping soundly as I secretly watched my Grandfather creep into my bedroom and fill my Santa sack/pillowcase which was laying over the end of my bed. It didn't help matters that I could hear my Mum whispering to him to not make a sound and wake my brother and I up. Too late lol. ReplyDeleteme and my twin brother decided we were going to catch Santa putting present under the tree. we hid behind the couch and when we heard a noise we jumped up turned on our torches and found out out mother was Santa.

DeleteI think I always knew that Santa wasn't real. I never really believed in anything that I couldn't see. I was a very logical (and probably annoying) child.

A friend told me Santa wasn't true when I was 5, I asked mum and she said he was true and my friend was naughty. I pretended to believe until I was 10...I thought I would get better presents that way...
