After posting some oat flour recipes (like my Apple Crumble Cake) I've gotten quite a few emails asking me how to make oat flour, where to buy oat flour or what you can use if you don't have it.
It's super simple to take whole rolled oats and turn them into oat flour - and you only have to make as much as you're going to use!
So simple, I can't even call it a recipe - infact!
Oat flour can be used in a wide variety of recipes, though it should generally be mixed with other flours to get the best results.
As you use whole oats, the flour contains the same nutritional content - so it's a win win!
So how do you make your own oat flour?
First you need to choose your weapon of choice. You can make oat flour in a:
- food processor
- blender
- magic bullet
- spice/coffee grinder
If your recipe calls for xx grams of oat flour, you'll need the same amount of whole oats. Generally speaking, I find 1 cup of whole oats yields a cup of oat flour (or near abouts) so that's what I do.
If you make more oat flour than your recipe calls for or just want to have some on hand, store it in an airtight container in a cool dry place if you're using it soon or store it in the freezer to extend its shelf life.
This week you can expect a recipe using oat flour, so keep your eyes peeled!
So tell me, how was your weekend?
Hi Kristy. Do you use gluten free oats? I find them really hard to purchase and used them once in a recipe. Being coeliac Ive been told not to eat oats and I know there is a school of thought that they are ok but when I did accidentally eat them once I was really ill. What would you use as a substitution?
ReplyDeleteThanks Jo
Hi Jo,
DeleteI do use gluten free oats for myself as I'm a coeliac.
With oats,, only 1 in 5 coeliacs cannot tolerate oat gluten - which is called Avenin. That means that 80% of us will have no problem with oat gluten. The reason why the coeliac society has warnings on oats and can't label uncontaminated oats "gluten free" is because that small percentage would still get sick.
If you have eaten them and gotten sick - you may have either eaten contaminated oats (most brands either use oats which have been rotated with wheat or gluten crops - or process them on lines used for other gluten cereals) or you may be in that small percentage.
In Australia, Freedom Foods are the only ones who make oats which are uncontaminated by any other source of gluten. Their quick oats are available in the health food section of Coles and Woolworths, but at the moment they don't have any rolled oats.
I buy my gluten free rolled oats from iHerb (http://www.iherb.com/bob-s-red-mill-gluten-free-old-fashioned-rolled-oats-32-oz-907-g/9951?rcode=oto868) and you can also buy gluten free oat flour, steel cut oats and quick oats as well. If you use the coupon code OTO868 at iHerb you also get $10 off your first order.
I'd say your best bet is to first try the Freedom Food Quick Oats - when they're on sale, they're only about $3-4 a packet so it's not a huge investment if you get sick!
Yesterday, while I was at work, my sister stole my apple ipad and tested to see if it
